Split vs. the Diving Ducks in Record-Breaking Heat

Split vs. the Diving Ducks in Record-Breaking Heat

Amid midsummer temperatures and the hottest day of the year so far, the U14 Metrostars visited the Diving Ducks in Wiener Neustadt yesterday. Despite the immense strain caused by the heat, the team showed great determination and ultimately managed to split the series—a loss in the first game was followed by a convincing victory in the second.

Game 1: Strong Ducks Pitcher Gives Metrostars Hardly Any Chances

In the first game, the Metrostars struggled to get their offense going. The Diving Ducks’ pitcher dominated the game, allowing only three hits. Jonas, Ibra, and Tobi were the only players who managed to get on base with a hit. However, they were unable to score a run against the hosts’ focused defense.

Defensively, the Metrostars started with the proven duo of Ibra on the mound and Tobi behind the plate. Through the end of the second inning, they kept the Ducks in check, allowing only two runs. Overall, though, the defense could have provided the pitchers with a little more support.

Starting in the third inning, Simon Lindtner took over on the mound. The Ducks consistently capitalized on several walks and scored a total of eight additional runs in the third and fourth innings.

Benny deserves special praise for his extremely attentive play at shortstop throughout the first four innings. On two separate occasions, he made crucial plays to secure third base, thereby preventing further runs by the Ducks.

Game 2: Tobi Dominates on the Mound – Strong Team Performance Secures the Win

The second game was a completely different story. With Tobi on the mound and Philipp behind the plate, the Metrostars controlled the game from the very start.

A big shout-out goes to Philipp, who handled the demanding catcher position superbly despite his limited experience. He fearlessly faced Tobi’s fast pitches and handled his duties with great confidence throughout the entire game.

Tobi impressively dominated the Ducks’ offense, racking up ten strikeouts by the end of the fourth inning. The hosts were able to score only one run during this stretch.

In the fifth inning, Benny took over on the mound. After the first batter reached base due to a defensive error, he attempted to steal second base. Nathaniel reacted quickly at shortstop, and together with Tobi at second base, they made the first crucial out.

Shortly thereafter came the game-deciding play: After a walk to first base, Nathaniel, Tobi, and Ibra executed a beautiful double play via shortstop, second base, and first base. With this spectacular play, the Metrostars ended the game and secured a well-deserved victory.

The Metrostars also impressed on offense. Ibra and Nathaniel each hit strong doubles. Tobi contributed two singles. Additional hits came from Jonas, Florian, and Philipp, who each contributed a single to the win.

After their decisive loss in the first game, the team put together an impressive comeback. In particular, their strong pitching performance, focused defense, and some spectacular plays ensured that the Metrostars were able to head home from Wiener Neustadt with a well-deserved split. Given the extreme temperatures, this was a strong team effort—not only on the field but also physically.
